The Hotel Thaya

The roots of the Hotel Thaya go back to 1870. For 21 years the house was a retreat and a kuk horse changing station. The then owner Karl Macho had the building demolished and built a hotel with a theater hall. After that, the hotel passed through several hands until 1979 when Franz Strohmer bought the house. Two years later he got married and with his wife brought the hotel into shape. The permanent staff is at least fourteen, some even 30 years in the house which speaks for a good working atmosphere and benefits the guest. After two floods, the hotel was renovated and expanded again and again. The Hotel Thaya was the first hotel in Lower Austria to receive the three-star superior award. The Lärchenstube from 1938 is particularly beautiful in the hotel. You feel right at home in it because it is really homely.
In January 2018 there was a fire in the dining room. Again, the misfortune was seen as an opportunity and the restaurant, the dining room and the reception were renovated and modernized from the ground up. On March 1st, 2019, after 40 years, the hotel passed from father to son.

From February 2022, the hotel, now renamed "Stadthotel Thaya", will belong to the group of"Waldviertel Hotels"

On a mild summer evening, it is wonderful to sit on the terrace towards the Thaya and watch the sunset behind Raabs Castle.

The kitchen is down to earth and honest. The chef attaches great importance to regional and traditional cuisine. The specialties in the Waldviertel are carp, game, potatoes and poppy dishes.

Poppy seed noodles are very typical, as gray poppy seeds are grown in Lower Austria. Carp comes first, followed by blunzen (blood sausages) and roast pork. Poppy seeds cover the sweet side with poppy seed strudel, poppy seed pancakes, poppy seed tents and poppy seed-crusted donuts.

We also cook the Waldviertel hazelnuts for you, which are grown just a few kilometers from Raabs.

It is not for nothing that the Hotel Thaya has received the "AMA Seal of Approval" for the regional dishes. Of course there is also a hazelnut spirit, but although it tastes delicious, the house grappa is the schnapps that is drunk the most.
